Bob Phillips
Bob Phillips
executive director

Bob Phillips has served as executive director of Common Cause North Carolina since 2001.

Bob's work includes lobbying the legislature and building statewide grassroots campaigns for good-government reforms. He is a North Carolina native, a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and worked as a broadcast journalist in Raleigh and press secretary for former Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker before joining Common Cause.

Alyssa Canty
Alyssa Canty

Alyssa joined Common Cause North Carolina in May of 2015, working with students at Fayetteville State, NC Central, St. Augustine's and Shaw universities.

She earned her Bachelor's of Art degrees in Women Studies and Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received a certificate in Not-for-Profit Management from Salem College and a Master's of Public Administration from North Carolina Central University.

Alyssa has worked with such organizations as Breakthrough Atlanta, Shodor Education Foundation, Lillian's List, Planned Parenthood of Central NC, and The LGBT Center of Raleigh.

Prior to joining Common Cause in January 2015, Brent worked for the NC Center for Voter Education for 5 years.

Brent’s nonprofit experience also includes working in policy and government relations for the Civil War Trust, an organization dedicated to the preservation of our nation’s endangered Civil War battlefields. He received a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech and a master's degree in political management from George Washington University.

Jane Pinsky

director of the NC Coalition for Lobbying & Government Reform

Jane Pinsky has been director of the North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform since 2007. The coalition, in which Common Cause North Carolina is a key player, works to make government, at all levels, more open and accessible to the citizens of North Carolina.

Since 1978, Pinsky has worked for nonprofit organizations working on civil rights, women’s rights, family issues, tax reform, highway safety, children’s health, and as her husband says – changing the world. She has worked with such groups as NARAL, the Democratic National Committee, American Nurses Association, National Women’s Employment Project.

Reggie Weaver

Reggie joined Common Cause in August of 2016. He works with our fellows at NC A&T University, Bennett College and Winston-Salem State University.

A native of Mobile, AL, he received his bachelors degree in Political Science from Rhodes College, and a Masters of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary.

Reggie has a background as a Presbyterian pastor. While in ministry, he worked with the faith community and other community leaders to address issues of economic justice, food insecurity, and public health.

Bryan manages Common Cause North Carolina's multimedia production, social-media projects and press outreach.

Prior to joining Common Cause NC in January of 2015, Bryan worked for 10 years with the NC Center for Voter Education. He has a bachelor's degree in communication and Spanish from Western Carolina University and an associate degree in Web technologies from Wake Technical Community College.

Dennis Burns
Dennis Burns

Dennis is the current chair of Common Cause North Carolina. He is a partner at Technology Commercialization Group, LLC, an international life sciences business development firm in RTP.

He has been a president/general manager of several North Carolina biotech or medical device companies before joining the TCG consulting practice. Previously Dennis had a 20-year career as a marketing and licensing executive at three Johnson & Johnson companies and at Richardson-Vicks.

Mary Morgan

Mary has been a longtime board member of the N.C. Center for Voter Education, which was co-founded by her father, former U.S. Senator Robert Morgan.

She is an attorney with the N.C. Community Foundation.

Jay A. Gladieux

Jay spent his career in finance and markets, with both Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan, in New York and Tokyo. He moved to North Carolina in 2004 to join Smith Breeden Associates, an institutional investment management partnership as a Portfolio Manager.

Jay is retired and spends his time working pro bono on issues that he cares about. He is a project director for the North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying & Government Reform.

Mark T. Nance

Mark is associate professor of political science in North Carolina State University’s School of Public and International Affairs. His teaching focuses largely on International Political Economy, International Organizations and European Politics.

His research focuses largely on the politics of illicit international markets, including money laundering, maritime piracy and nuclear trafficking.

Larry King

Larry is a retired professor of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University. He has served on the Board of Common Cause NC since 1995, holding offices of chair, secretary, and now treasurer.

His current interests include analyzing election results to evaluate gerrymandering’s threat to democracy. For 10 years he also has served on the board of the Women’s Center of Wake County.

Chris Fitzsimon

Dion is a process improvement engineer with the State of North Carolina. He is a former member of the Wake County Board of Elections.

Dion is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, one of the seven HBCU schools included in the Common Cause NC Democracy Fellows program.

Chris Fitzsimon

Chris is the Founder and Director of NC Policy Watch – a progressive public policy think tank that is a special project of the NC Justice Center.

He writes the daily Fitzsimon File, delivers a daily radio commentary that is broadcast statewide on the North Carolina News Network, and hosts News and Views, a weekly radio news magazine that also airs on the network stations.

The Reverend Doctor Earl Cornell Johnson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism (with a concentration in religion and philosophy).

He also holds a Master of Divinity Degree from The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia.

Ann is a longtime member and former chair of Common Cause North Carolina. Now retired, she was an English Instructor at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC, where she lives.

She currently serves on the UNCG Board of Visitors, is the vice-chair of the Lee County Friends of the Library, and is the chair of the Lee County Democratic Party. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

David is a Raleigh entrepreneur, whose businesses include Carpenter Real Estate, Trophy Brewing and Runologie.

He led the launch of the coalition NC Business Leaders for Accountability, which advocates for nonpartisan redistricting in North Carolina.

James Millikan

Jim is a retired professor of political science who taught for three decades at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, and served as chair of the political science department there for 12 years. He was recipient of the college-wide Outstanding Faculty Service Award.

Jim grew up in Greensboro. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and his Ph.D. from the University of California – Riverside.

Emily Riehl

Emily is currently a Business Segment Advisor for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. She joined the board of Common Cause in 2016. She graduated in May 2015 with a Masters in Public Policy from Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy, and graduated in 2009 from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelors of Arts in Music & International Studies.

Prior to her studies, Emily worked as a community organizer for a grassroots group named Virginia Organizing. Her current interests include organizing to end gerrymandering, encouraging Millennials to participate democratically and in expanding health access to all North Carolinians.
